Op Shop (Opportunity Shop) in New Zealand translates to ‘Charity Shop’ or ‘Thrift Store’ in US or Canada. Or in a broader more generic language, many consumers will understand: Bargain.
Op Shops are retail facilities manageed by charitable groups to raise money. It is a type of social enterprise. The staff in-charge of these shops are mostly volunteers and most of their products are donated by the public. Because the items were obtained for free and due to low business cost, goods are sold at competitive prices!
Once business cost (operating cost) is paid what left from the sales is used in accordance to the group’s charitable purposes. So for the general public, you don’t only get to buy cheap products, you also get to support a charitable cause!
Anyway, how about you- where’s your favorite Op Shop located? What great items have you bought? Any tips/suggestions about Op Shopping?
