Internationally Qualified Nurses: Competence Assessment Programme

If you are reading this post, then I am assuming you have received the Decision Letter from Nursing Council of New Zealand to enroll in a Competence Assessment Program which will then allow you to apply for a NZ Nursing Registration.

If you are not familiar with the registration process for Internationally Qualified Nurses (IQN) then  please click  here  to read my post about it

General Information: NZ nurses returning to practice after a period of five years or more are required to complete an approved competence assessment program before a practicing certificate is issued.  Likewise, overseas nurses are required to complete this program before registration in New Zealand.

Specific Information:

1. After receiving your Nursing Council Decision Letter (approval), you can now start looking for CAP-accredited schools.  For your convenience, below is a list of NCNZ approved, CAP providers:

2. Check out their website and find more information about a) duration of study, b) next study intake (start of course), c) location (so you can also arrange your accommodation),  d) cost/tuition fee, e) any specific requirements.

3.  As soon as you complete your research, contact the provider and start with your enrollment.  You may want to do this as soon as you can, because based on my personal experience CAP slots are in-demand and the waiting list for application can be long.

4.   Once you’ve completed the enrollment process (meaning you have received Offer of Place from your school or confirmation of enrollment), then you are ready to apply for a visa and finally travel to New Zealand!  There are different visa available, so remember: do your research and choose the one which best suit your situation.

Bonus Information:  The CAP course is consists of didactic (class-room/lecture) and practical  (hospital/resthome) placement.  This course usually runs for 6-12 weeks and can cost (tuition fee) around $6,500 or more depending on the tertiary school.  There maybe additional activities/reports required from you during your study, but, overall you will need to submit the Competence Assessment Form to the Nursing Council of New Zealand at the end of your course.  The Nursing Council will review this form and based on the evidence you provide, you will be awarded with a nursing registration/annual practicing certificate.  Remember that during your study, you will be assigned to a preceptor who can best help with the completion and submission of this form.

If you want to view this form, go to Nursing Council of New Zealand website:

http://www.nursingcouncil.org.nz/Education/Competence-assessment-programmes

*Hover towards the download section and click Competence Assessment Form: Registered Nurses (IQN), as shown below:

iqn

Finally, remember that CAP information/requirements may change so always, always check the NCNZ website or  your CAP provider/school for any updates.

Good luck with your CAP application!
